School Counseling Resources

Ms. Serenity joined the staff of Taylor Elementary in the fall of 2022. Prior to that, she was a high school counselor for 12 years at Grand Junction High School.  She  taught students at Grand Mesa Middle School from 2001 to 2010 as a 6th grade social studies teacher. She has also taught second grade and preschool. Her credentials include a bachelor's degree from Mesa State College in social sciences with a minor in elementary education (2000) and a masters degree from Adams State College is K-12 school counseling (2011). She also has certifications as an addictions counselor and a yoga teacher. It is her life’s work to help people reach their full potential by  showing them that they can overcome obstacles and conquer self-limiting beliefs.

Ms. Serenity works with all students at Taylor Elementary via monthly social emotional learning lessons during specials.  We learn about the brain and coping or calm down skills to help with self-regulation.  We practice skills for learning like active listening and we explore empathy and respect to help us be good friends and citizens.  We learn how to disagree respectfully and solve problems in fair ways so that we can all meet the Taylor Tornado expectations of "Be respectful. Be responsible. Be safe. Be your best." Families are always welcome to come and join in our lessons!

Our comprehensive school counseling program also includes groups for students.  Ms. Serenity collaborates with HopeWest to offer grief groups.  She also offers Calm Ninjas for students who need extra practice with emotion regulation and Changing Families groups for students who are managing parental divorce, seperation or remarriage. Any student who participates in a group must have a permission slip on file that is specific to that group.

Taylor Elementary's school counseling program also offers weekly check-ins for students who need one on one support.  These check-ins are arranged individually with your child's teacher and parent permission is required. Skills like self-advocacy, changing unhelpful habits to more helpful ones, and how to manage emotions in safe and healthy ways can be worked on during weekly check-ins.

Feel free to contact our school counselor, Ms. Serenity at serenity@d51schools.org or 970-254-4870 ext 63100 if you feel your child could benefit from check-ins or a small group.
